I've been in love with him since I was in the Academy, basically. Problem was, so was my best friend. It was stupid, but we fought over him for a long time. I kind of regret— I definitely regret all that time we spent being rivals instead of friends, even if she got so much stronger because of it. It didn't even really matter, since I don't think he wanted anything to do with either of us. I'm pretty sure he still doesn't. Anyway, he betrayed our village when we were 12, and I don't know if there's any coming back from that. I can't trust him anymore.
Anyone who has betrayed you once will do it again. And where there isn't trust you can't have anything, Yamanaka. You deserve better. Way better. What is it you liked in him? We can find you someone.
[--okay, he can't help but laugh at that. It's a good distraction from where his thoughts had been, and it's several moments before Ryan manages to quiet it enough to answer.]
I think we're all pretty done with statues after that, yeah. I don't have a problem with getting rid of 'em.
[He exhales heavily, trying to shake the last of the remaining amusement out of his voice; it's only mostly successful.]
You don't have to call me Farrow, y'know. I mean-- unless you'd rather keep it more formal? I don't want to assume anything, it's-- just, uh, if you're comfortable with it.
Uh. No. Not really trying for formal. It's just reflex.
[Garrus shrugs, remembering only a moment later that he's trying not to jostle the guy using him for a pillow.]
We're military. Turians, I mean. I tend to call people by their family name for a while. Doesn't really mean anything. But I can try to remember to call you Ryan. Especially if you help me take out statues.
It's a thing for military humans too, I get it. M'just used to reading it as a formality, I'm-- hell, I don't even need to say I've always been pretty civilian, huh.
[If he's jostled too much, he doesn't seem to mind; Ryan simply shifts a bit more, turns slightly to wrap both arms around him. It's a little easier that way, not to mention the fact that facing Garrus a bit more means he's speaking more clearly.]
So taking out statues, detecting things for you-- any other conditions I should be aware of here?
[He manages a small grin there, definitely not serious.]
Yes. Training with me. Also, if I get sick, you're bringing me water.
[The opening was there, and he was going to take it. Sure, there was teasing involved in this, but he's not giving up on teaching Ryan how to shoot. The guy isn't going to be as vulnerable a target for long. Garrus will make sure of it.]
I know, I just thought—I guess I thought things could go back to the way they were. I mean, this is the first time I've even seen him since then. He's changed a lot.
[ a few moments later: ]
Let's just work on getting you a date first, alright?
If you're sure. One of us is young and more likely to win someone over, though. And can trap them if they try to run with her hair. Handy skill to have.
I'm working with Sun and Shepard's thing. But that's general training for groups, by the sounds of what they're putting together. Glad you're signed up.
[He's pretty impressed, actually. That's not going to be an easy program.]
Still. Gonna be giving you tips and working with you too. Keep you up to speed with it. And I'll decide if I get sick if I want hovering or not, how's that?
'Least it won't all be up to you, though. I'll be getting the general stuff from them-- already had someone else get with me about doing training exercises together, that should help.
[Or it will once he's up to, you know, leaving his bunk... look, it's a work in progress, this is merely a setback.]
...and thanks. Probably gonna need all the help I can get, m'still pretty new compared to a lot of the other recruits.
I'll do what I can. Now. How about we get you over to Medical to see if they can do anything about a hangover? Evaluations are starting. Got one of my own to think about, and people on every team to wait around for.
[And people on every team to worry about now, too. ]
You underestimate the attractiveness of someone who listens as opposed to someone who demands. Also you're letting the fact that you're pretty get to your head. External beauty doesn't last forever.
