Can't say I'd exactly look forward to it, by the sounds of it. Training is usually a good thing, at least.
[Also at least - they probably won't be dying. But Garrus is not going to say he envies anyone who wound up assigned to the black box.]
About half my group's headed in there. Wondering how many pieces d'Artagnan and I will be picking up between sessions.
[He's got pronouncing the name down, now, at least.]
You need anything...
[Garrus shrugs to make the offer seem like less, but he doesn't actually expect the black box to go easy on anyone. This is a little more worried than he'd thought the conversation would go when they last talked, but that had been before results. That had been when he expected them both to pass with flying colors.]
Could always ask Armada if you could be my lieutenant.
Harder's overrated. Faster and stronger aren't. More practiced isn't. I'd suggest not focusing so much on getting hard, Hanna. Tough and hard aren't always the same.
FROM: vakarian.garrus@cdc.org
I have no idea how to guess what's coming up. But you'll have me there for you.
[ He's not going to obsess over what might be in the box, there's too much else he's supposed to be figuring out. And what was that Armada said: You're still in the field. You can't predict everything. He's always in the field so long as he doesn't trust a faceless chain of command.
He raises an eyebrow at Garrus, letting out a short laugh. ]
Still hung up about that? [ Another laugh, though more like a soft snort from his nose. He'd almost forgotten about Garrus' lack of a subordinate during their short stint with bumped clearance. Steve shakes his head, smiling. ] You wouldn't want me anyway. I've never been too good at following orders. That's kind of how I got promoted back home.
We've gotten more people since the last slang gathering, haven't we? Whole world we're going to, too. Gonna be plenty of opportunities.
FROM: vakarian.garrus@cdc.org
And if pit stop translates to shore leave, I'm betting there'll be plenty of new slang to make. Like Gale-ing it up, which would be pissing off Gliese to near incoherence.
[Garrus' mandibles flare. The joke had the intended effect and Steve's looking cheerful again.]
I wouldn't say hung up. Let's say more... something that's lingered. You know. One of those things. If I didn't think Aeryn would shoot me I'd try to steal Shepard, but I like my blood where it is.
[Their drinks arrive, and Garrus lifts his bottle in Steve's direction.]
To figuring this whole thing out, and improving?
[Steve's not the only one who needs to get better. Garrus passed, but they've lost another of their crew. He needs to improve and cover as much as they can. They're in danger, all of the recruits, and he's been thinking about the Almina a lot since he saw Optimus in the hangar bay.]
[The next messages take some deliberation, but eventually he just goes for it-- hell, he's sure he's failing tomorrow too, the only way things could go further downhill would be if his instructor somehow changed his mind and decided to send him to Grey after all. He may as well find out how something a little more direct goes over.]
FROM: farrow.ryan@cdc.org
Bad enough that can't fix it? I didn't know I was so sharp. :(
FROM: farrow.ryan@cdc.org
In that case- need me to kiss it better?
[behold, the smoothest of the smooth, deliverer of fine lines, etc. etc.]
[There's a definite delay. This is too deliberate this time, after all the teasing and the game of innuendo chicken-and-blame, to be a joke. Ryan's hitting on him and Garrus has to decide how he feels about it. The guy's friendly, smart, has a good head. On the other hand, Garrus already has someone making casual a bit complicated. Add to that the fact that the guy's a civilian... but he's a civilian learning how to shoot. Taking things on that are daunting, not clinging to being a bystander in a situation that doesn't allow bystanding.
Why not? As long as they're clear.]
FROM: vakarian.garrus@cdc.org I'm not looking for anything more than casual. If we're good on that, yes.
You say that like being different species doesn't make things complicated by nature.
[But that's dodging the topic, a bit. Ryan's never had a problem with non-humans-- hell, he'd seen what his shapeshifter friend really looked like back home, and clearly he's already been flirting in his own awkward way here. Even so, he's not positive it's something he wants to leap right into.
Maybe it's the alien thing; maybe he just tends to be a little more traditional at heart. Either way:]
FROM: farrow.ryan@cdc.org
...'casual' can still mean taking it a little slow though, right?
[This is somehow easier when it's someone else making the first moves.]
FROM: vakarian.garrus@cdc.org
Casual means that anything is just sex. No expectations, nothing tangled. Not exclusive, no claims on each other.
FROM: vakarian.garrus@cdc.org
We can go slow.
FROM: vakarian.garrus@cdc.org
But not a dating sort of slow. That's not what I'm looking for. If it's something you're looking for, then I'm not who you want. I won't be bothered, either.
[He's already got Noh-Varr giving him looks that get his heart pounding. He won't add another layer of complication to that.]
You don't have to worry about that, I'm... not really the dating type. The last guy I was with was more of a friend-with-benefits, I'm used to that.
[By which he means 'I'm not the type people want to date'.]
FROM: farrow.ryan@cdc.org
That's not the kind of slow I mean, I just. I'd rather hang out for a bit and see how it goes than decide anything's going to happen ahead of time, I guess?
My point is, you don't know that for sure. I mean, why wouldn't he want more? Sure, you kind of suck at everything flirting and your jokes are terrible, but he seems to actually like that. Do you know how crazy that is? You need to lock it down now before he gets away. Just think about it, okay?
