They could be synthetic with an advanced cooling system, they could have some sort of tech covering up for them, like a cloaking device. Got a crewmember back home who uses one of those.
Could be a drone, avatar, VI or AI projected from a hidden controller. And seeing as Dagger's made of ice, gonna guess that he and his people don't have heat signatures. Could be wrong there.

Actually, got a question for you. Korra can do things with water. Does that extend to ice? Can she set traps up with it? You said you taught an Avatar.
