Superheroes only exist in movies. Someone important to me, someone who had changed the game in the galaxy, died. She was no longer making a difference, so I needed to step up. Make double the difference. Easiest place to do that was where the slavers, drug dealers, and other lowlifes felt safe. Hit them where it hurt, do the most damage. And it worked.

Not sure what a pimp is. Omega was a high traffic area for stolen goods and selling drugs and slaves. Still is. Even I couldn't completely disrupt it. If I had, they would have set up shop elsewhere. I do what I can. Nobody's perfect. But anyone can work to change things.

Can't wrap my head around it being illegal. That'd probably only increase the sale of slaves. I figured it was the ones who looked the other way who were the worst. The ones who would ignore what was going on as long as a few credits landed in their pockets. How did rules-following go wrong? Not to question you, just because I'm not following.

So I'm in there figuring out what to do -- my one brother wants to go to the military, right? Which he can fucking say goodbye to if the cop books him, and the other one I'd like to see go to college, which is a hell of a lot fucking harder if he ends up in juvie at seventeen. Kinda tanks your test scores.

I get there and run into this cop I've known since kindergarten, we grew up together and shit, he has this big stupid fucking crush on me. I talk real nice, and get real sad -- not really acting, there. But next thing you know, after making that big fucking deal about locking my brothers up? All the sudden they're dropping charges, and that cop I knew, he asks me out on a date.

You're a smart guy, I'll let you figure out what the moral of the story is.

The moral of the story is that those were morons, and thankfully we tend to put morons in jobs where they can't hurt others. Doesn't always work. But generally they're out of the way and other people are safer. Corrupt, weak cops don't deserve the job. Sorry you had to put up with a jerk to take care of your brothers.

Sure, let's go for justice, since my story was so fucking depressing.

There was this slaver. Turoth Dat'terah. Mean, permanently angry. Batarian. So he's your typical... Wait, right. Batarians are pretty curt, pretty used to slavery, four eyes, all of them constantly glaring, that sort of a thing. Bipedal, about human height. Anyway. So he operated out of Omega. Pretty profitable op - runaways make it to the station, he promised work if they showed up, they wound up taken. I used it against him.

Had one of my people call him. Sensat. She was always good at sounding younger. Convinced him she needed a job. He was wary. Most people didn't contact him. I figured he'd come anyway, and have a lot of his men in case it was a trap. And that was what we were ready for. Proximity mines, snipers, everyone in place. Turoth and his best walked in, me and mine walked out. Hit his base of ops after that, took out more of his people, wound up setting free a good twenty kids.

[She sounds shocked.] Kids? You told the guards, right? 'Cause that shit gets you fucked up in prison.

But... that's a good story. Good guys win. Maybe it's an alien thing; that crap only happens in movies on Earth.

[His voice is calm and even.] No guards. When I say we took them out, I mean every slaver is dead. There's no laws on Omega against slavery. They wouldn't have been charged with anything, wouldn't've faced punishments. Me and my people? We were the punishment.

And the good guys don't always win. A lot of them don't. But the reason I'm still alive is because I've kept winning.

Jesus. Better'n nothing, I guess. [Still, she makes mental note to never tell Garrus about any time she or her family has done anything illegal.] Sounds like where you're from's a lot more... intense than where I'm from.

Everywhere's intense, I figure. Some acclimate, some don't. And it's a lot more settled if you're planet-bound. Generally. You have crime still, conflict, but it's not as bad as things can get in space. Gotta say I wouldn't trade space for planetary life, though. There's something about the stars...

Mm. The people too. You stay on a planet, and you get hide-bound. You figure your people's way is the best way. Don't really learn about others and how they do things. Stagnate. If you're in space working with people of other species, most of the time you learn. Some don't. You get stupid everywhere.
