You didn't, I don't think. What did he do with Gliese?
[Probably something with no self-preservation thought at all. All Garrus can hope is that it's glown over, that Gliese isn't angry. He's already trying to help one kid who is in trouble with an instructor. He doesn't need a second.]
Gliese snapped both my arms and abandoned me on a mountain miles away from camp just because I stalled on saying yes to raising her stupid bahari. [ Said very, very flatly. ] Any human in my position would have died a slow, painful, and miserable death. You think if Hibari challenges her there'll even be a body left to drag back?
Do you think if she wanted you dead she would have left you living? She didn't want to kill you. She stopped short of it. Pretty sure Gliese knows exactly what would kill someone, and as long as they don't cross some lines, she won't end them.
[Optimus is an obvious exception, but for obvious reasons.]
Don't be insulting. Of course she didn't want to kill me. But we don't know the same would be true of Hibari. That's the point I'm making! I'm afraid if he pushes his luck she won't hold back.
I've got a little faith in her, that she's got a high tolerance. There is a line, yeah. I don't think challenging her to a fight, with the motivation he had, is crossing it. I think as long as he manages some respect, he should be all right.
[ Vriska huffs through her nose and reaches up with both hands to tug on a rope of her hair. Vriska's body language is very easy to read, generally. She gestures broadly and often, and will often telegraph how she feels just as clearly with her movements as with her tone and expression. But it's not often that she gives such a clear and open display of anxiety.
Tug tug. ]
Yeah, whatever. [ Her mouth works and she lets go of her hair, tossing it back over her shoulder instead. ] That's just part of why he needs me around! To help make sure he doesn't get ground into a gross, sticky pulp.
[It's a young gesture, and a little endearing. She really gives a damn about Hibari, and Garrus wonders if she's aware of that. If Hibari is, either. Sometimes these things sneak up on you. He would know.
But he doesn't say that, because he doesn't want to make Vriska angry.]
So you'll keep him from being too rash, and he'll keep you from being too rash? Sounds like a good plan, actually. Balancing. You're lucky to have that. So is he.
Uuuuuuuugh. [ Vriska lets her head fall back on her shoulders as she groans, and when she lifts it again she's actually a little blue in the face. Yeah, she's got problems. ]
Reciprocity and equality in a relationship? Gross.
[ Now Vriska actually pauses, seeming to consider him all over again ... and she actually has the grace to look sheepish. ]
All things considered, this is probably not what you want to be talking about right now. And you're talking about it anyway! You're a good guy, Garrus. Thanks.
[ She wants to contradict him. Point out that she's never had a relationship work out, usually because she ruined them.
But somehow it doesn't feel right to do so. He's trying to believe that there are people for whom this crazy thing works. Tearing it down right now for the sake of argument just ... makes her feel kind of gross.
So she doesn't. She shrugs, awkward and teenage, and lets it go. ]
Obviously don't have the basics down myself. But if you ever need someone to help you out with it, I'm willing.
[He's never tried before. It's probably shown. And while he knows he doesn't want to deal with that pain ever again, he also knows that there's a great deal of what he'd had that he'd enjoyed and he'll miss. It's a mess. And he wishes it could be otherwise.]

[ If her tone and word choice didn't make her frustration clear, her angry gesticulations would. ]
I knew he was insane, but not suicidally so.

[There's a beat, and his mandibles draw close to his face. That had been public, and very stupid.]
You can't really protect him there. But if she leaves him alone, you can at least drag his body to Medical.

It's the best you can ever hope for, in my opinion.. The both of them together. And it's good, Vriska.
[What he would give... But he's already given too much and he isn't about to get that.]

It's not the topic I most wanna cover, no. But... But it's good if someone's getting it right. If someone has something working.
